Record Numbers and Unforgettable Moments at the Rain-Soaked 2025 Kilmovee 10K & 5K Races
Kilmovee, Co. Mayo – Saturday, April 19th 2025
Rain might have been the order of the day, but the spirit of Kilmovee shone brighter than ever as the 2025 Kilmovee 10K & 5K Road Races welcomed a record-breaking 800+ participants to the village. Held under a persistent soft Irish drizzle, this year’s event marked the first time in its proud history that rain played a leading role—but nobody seemed to mind.
From early morning, Kilmovee was buzzing. Number collection opened at 10:30am, and the build-up began. Runners, joggers, and walkers of all ages descended on the scenic Mayo village, with many making use of the free shuttle bus and ample parking laid on by the always-organised team of volunteers.
The grey skies couldn’t dull the colour or the craic. Music filled the air, rain jackets mingled with running vests, and umbrellas bobbed like balloons as families, friends, and clubs gathered ahead of the twin races.
A heart-warming highlight of the day came with the surprise celebration for Ann Groden, a local legend and regular participant, who was greeted with an age-themed birthday party on arrival. Balloons, bunting, and a rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday” brought smiles and even a few happy tears—proving once again that Kilmovee knows how to mix fitness and fun in perfect measure.
Despite the rain, the atmosphere was electric. Spirits weren’t dampened, and neither was the enthusiasm of the runners. From elite athletes chasing personal bests to families tackling the 5K together, every participant had a smile and a story.
As the races began, shoes splashed through puddles, cheers rang out, and volunteers manned every corner with encouragement and rain-soaked high-fives. Finishers were welcomed back with cheers and applause, refreshments, and that familiar Kilmovee hospitality.
Organisers hailed the 2025 event as the biggest and best yet, thanking the army of volunteers, sponsors, Gardaí, and supporters who made the day a safe and successful one. With over 800 people taking part, it’s clear the Kilmovee 10K & 5K continues to grow from strength to strength—rain or shine.
And as one drenched but beaming runner put it crossing the line:
“Sure it’s only a bit of rain – we’re in Mayo!”
