Enter the Samsung A54 5G, a mid-range contender that I initially picked up as a stopgap until I could decide on my next move. To my surprise, the A54 5G held its own in ways I didn’t expect. While it doesn’t have the same premium allure or ultra-high specs of the S21 Ultra, it comes remarkably close in areas that matter.
Hardware & Performance:
The A54 5G is powered by a solid chipset, offering smooth performance for most tasks, from everyday multitasking to media consumption and gaming. While it doesn’t quite have the same punch as a flagship, it rarely left me feeling underwhelmed. The 120Hz refresh rate was a particularly pleasant surprise, delivering smooth scrolling and a fluid experience typically reserved for higher-end models.
Display & Design:
Samsung’s reputation for excellent displays continues with the A54 5G. The vibrant AMOLED screen, with sharp colors and deep blacks, reminded me why I loved Samsung displays in the first place. The build quality also feels premium for a mid-range device, though it’s not quite as polished as the flagship S21 Ultra.
Camera:
The camera setup is surprisingly capable, especially for a device in this price range. While it’s not on par with the S21 Ultra’s versatility, the A54 5G produces sharp, vibrant photos in good lighting and handles low-light situations reasonably well. It might not satisfy serious photography enthusiasts, but for general use, it’s more than sufficient.

The battery life on the A54 5G easily outshines my old S21 Ultra. It comfortably lasts a full day with regular use, and even on heavier days, I wasn’t scrambling for a charger. The fast charging feature is a bonus, though it’s not the fastest on the market.
Final Thoughts:
Despite my initial reservations, the Samsung A54 5G stepped up and delivered a surprisingly satisfying experience. It offers a solid balance of performance, design, and features that come close to flagship territory without the flagship price tag. While the abrupt failure of my S21 Ultra left a bitter taste, the A54 5G helped restore some faith in Samsung’s ability to make reliable devices.
Would I return to Samsung after the S21 Ultra’s early demise? I’m still torn. But the A54 5G has at least shown that Samsung’s mid-range offerings can still provide excellent value for money and a reliable, enjoyable user experience.
